Varkala
Where the cliff meets the sea and the sacred meets the shore
Kerala's Sacred Cliff Coast
Drama, Devotion & the Arabian Sea
Varkala is unlike any other beach in Kerala. A 15-metre laterite cliff drops sheer to a pristine beach below, and the clifftop path — lined with Ayurveda centres, yoga studios, and seafood restaurants — offers uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea from sunrise to sunset.
At the cliff's northern end, the ancient Janardhana Swami Temple — one of Kerala's most sacred Vishnu shrines — has stood for over 2,000 years. The combination of the sacred and the spectacular makes Varkala a destination of rare depth.
LX Tours arranges stays at the finest clifftop properties, Ayurveda programmes with certified practitioners, and private experiences that reveal the quieter, more spiritual side of this extraordinary place.

Varkala Experiences
Varkala Cliff & North Beach
Kerala's most dramatic coastline — a 15-metre laterite cliff drops sheer to a pristine beach below. The clifftop path, lined with cafés and Ayurveda centres, offers uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea.
Clifftop Ayurveda Retreats
Varkala has some of Kerala's finest Ayurveda centres, perched on the cliff with sea views. The combination of ocean air, medicinal herbs, and expert practitioners makes this an exceptional wellness destination.
Janardhana Swami Temple
One of Kerala's most sacred Vishnu temples, dating back over 2,000 years, sits at the cliff's edge. The temple's location — where the sacred meets the sea — is deeply atmospheric.
Papanasam Beach
The sacred beach below the temple is believed to wash away sins. Calm, clean, and far less crowded than Kovalam, it is ideal for swimming and watching the fishing boats return at dawn.
Sunset at the Cliff Edge
Varkala's sunsets are among Kerala's most spectacular — the cliff faces due west, and the sky turns extraordinary shades of orange and crimson as the sun drops into the Arabian Sea.
Backwater Canoe Tours
The Varkala backwaters — quieter and less visited than Alleppey — offer intimate canoe tours through mangrove channels, past fishing villages and coconut groves, with a naturalist guide.

Varkala FAQs
How is Varkala different from Kovalam?
Varkala is quieter, more spiritual, and more dramatic than Kovalam. The cliff setting is unique in Kerala — there is nothing quite like it elsewhere on the coast. It attracts a more discerning traveller seeking Ayurveda, yoga, and genuine relaxation rather than a busy beach resort scene.
How far is Varkala from Trivandrum Airport?
Varkala is approximately 50 km from Trivandrum International Airport — about 1 hour by road. Trivandrum has direct flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.
Is Varkala good for Ayurveda?
Yes — Varkala has some of Kerala's finest Ayurveda centres, many perched on the cliff with sea views. The combination of ocean air, a relaxed pace, and expert practitioners makes it an excellent Ayurveda destination, particularly for shorter programmes of 5–10 days.
What is the best time to visit Varkala?
October to March is ideal — calm seas, clear skies, and perfect swimming conditions. The monsoon (June–September) brings dramatic waves and a moody atmosphere, but swimming is not safe. April–May is hot but quieter.
